So, I have found myself into this discussion. Apparently, some people think romance stories need to have good endings where the lovers end up together. I don't agree with that at all. Where is the writer's imagination and quality of the story in all that? Does that mean that as long as the story has a happy ending it doesn't need to have quality writing? Isn't all that very silly and entitled at the very least.
Because, for me, a romance story is just a love story. Not every love story out there ends with a good ending. Maybe the partners find that they were not really made for one another. That is okay. I have seen many stories where the lovers find themselves distant at the end, and in all those cases the stories ended up being good. Why do these people feel so entitled to think that every story needs to end the way they want? It doesn't make any sense, unless we are talking about a certain kind of demographic.
Yes, let's involve the entitled people here. Those people think that every story needs to end the way they want. If one character finds in a deeply troubling situation, the romance readers will think the character will survive through it somehow. It's like thinking their famous actor can't die during any point of the story.
It actually makes my blood boil to think that romance stories need to end in a certain way. Some- NO, many people need to realize a good story is independent of how it ended, as long as the ending makes sense and wasn't rushed.
I am writing a romance story, and it won't end with a "happy ever after ending." And even if my story receives negative reviews because of it, I will still think I did a damn fine job because it would mean the plot was good.
I just don't want to be limited by what the readers what my story to end like.
